pony poll

  • Jun. 3rd, 2011 at 11:44 PM
antoj: (Attitude)
i am seriously considering opening commissions for pony plush like the fluttershy doll i already made. however, i have never done plush commissions before and would like some input...

if you don't care about ponies you can just skip this, unless you have any advice for selling custom plush in general...

btw please be honest in the poll, if you don't like the way i designed my plush please tell me. i don't want to market ugly/poorly constructed looking things. :3

[Poll #1748779]

i think that's all...really... I'm not going to open them right away, as i still want to make another character (or two, idk) to see how i can fix up the pattern better. :/ I'm worried about doing commissions for this kind of thing, but at the same time i think it could be fun (and a way to make some monies for like, that art book i want and stuff lol)

I honestly can't put a value on those plush, because to me, they're priceless. <3 Herp derp, corny reply, I know. Fluttershy is gorgeous! I'd be willing to place a good $ amount on one of your plush, depending on how much I can burn. S'not like I get paid a lot at work. :/ But perhaps if there were payment installments, I would seriously consider it. :D

I'd be interested in Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, or my OC pony. :3

Aww LOL that's super nice of you. I was mostly asking that to get an idea of what to price them, because I seriously have no idea. c.c I want to be fair, you know? Depending on what I decide I could probably offer payments and stuff too.

ooo and you have an OC Pony?? :D

♥ Always consider time and materials when thinking of a price. You wanna get paid for your time making it. Also, size plays a factor. The larger, the pricier. I've never done a custom before, so I'm referring to what I've seen others do.

I do! :D http://yaoi-queen.livejournal.com/83109.html

I would be using the same pattern I used to make Fluttershy (since it would make refining a lot easier if I stick to the same pattern) and she's about 10 inches long from the bottom of her foot to the tip of her nose, not counting her tail which is really long. And then from the bottom of her foot to the top of her ear is about 4.5 inches... so maybe a little bigger than a beanie baby? :I

I've been making plush on-and-off for a few years now, but only recently am I really starting to have a lot of fun with it. I'm just nervous about selling them because I've not done it before.
[identity profile] yaoi-queen.livejournal.com wrote:

Pff, from the looks of her in the pics, I assumed she was a big bigger. ^^; Ten inches is quite long, though. My custom Mightyena is 14 inches and still kinda big. IDK man, I'm no expert on this subject. ^^; Price them however much you feel is fair to you and the buyer.

I can understand you feeling nervous. :/ But your plush are awesome, so people will love them. Trust me. ;)

I'm sorry that I'm picking "other" on all of these. I do quite like the ponies, though I'm not sure if I'm hardcore enough to want a plush. My pony collection consists of one figure at the moment. I might pick up one or two more figures eventually, but...

As for which pony, I can't decide between Twilight and Rainbow and Pinkie. I like them all. I think a Rainbow or Pinkie would sell better, since they seem to be the most popular. Making OC ponies is also a fun idea, though I wouldn't want one of my OC pony. My pony is a joke, since my friends tell me "all you ever do is complain."

I'd rate Fluttershy a 4. The plush is adorable (and I applaud embroidering the buttmark), but I'm not sure how well the mane translates. The only pony plush I've seen have individual strands of hair for the manes, which I think I would prefer on a plush like Fluttershy. However, I think your style would work great for some of the shorter-haired ponies.

I'm really not sure on the price... Maybe try to do it auction style and see what happens? Personally, I'd start somewhere between $30 and $40. As a side note, are there any pony communities that you could sell these in? I've noticed that custom plush on pkmncollectors can sell for 3-4 times what they would on ebay/etsy/DA.

I'm not sure what the last question is asking, exactly. I think a plush like this should sell for at least $60, considering the embroidered mane and eyes and how much labor you put into it... but I'm not sure what demand is like for pony plush. That's why the answer on the previous question was lower, btw. Actually starting an auction at $60+ could turn people off.

Fair enough! :U That's why I posted this, to get feedback and an idea of how this would go. lol.

Curious though what you mean by individual strands? I haven't really seen other custom plush of these characters so I wasn't sure what to go for... I've seen pictures of the official hasbro ones and they're rather terrifying (short fun fur mohawks on like all of them D:)

Also the buttmark was made from felt, but then meticulously sewed on...bit by bit... so were her eyes, actually. It sounds like it would be more of a pain but it actually was easier than embroidery like I usually do (not to mention less painful hurrhurr)

The last question is basically like, what value do you feel it actually has, I guess? Like reguardless of what you think I should charge to make it fair for everyone ...basically if the work looked like it should be worth less than the time i'd spend putting into it (in which case wouldnt really be worth it for me dootdoot)

also i don't know the demand for them either, or where i could sell them....but i know i got some people asking me on dA if i would sell them too... BUT THEN AGAIN this could be people like I WILL GIVE YOU 10 DOLLAR FOR IT or something @_@

i basically just dont want to spend a ton of time making them and then like, have it turn out not to be worth it or a huge headache or something. it seems like it could be fun to make more dolls of them though so skalljkd idk.

I wasn't talking about customs. I was talking about the old MLP plush, like this one. I don't know what that type of hair is called, but I like it. Still, I think your method could work. The hair on the top of Fluttershy's head looks good. I think it's the bottom of the mane that seems a little flat. Maybe if you exaggerated the curl at the tip?

I haven't seen any custom plush of the new characters either. Even if someone else did make these plush, I think your laying down style is unique enough that you'd get some interest in them. And I agree: the Hasbro ones are terrifying.

Yeah, DA people tend to severely undercharge for custom work. I'll never understand that, since DA is an art site. I think what you need is to find some MLP collectors community, preferably one dedicated to the new series. Surely one exists, somewhere. Barring that, DA might work.
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 01:51 am (UTC)
ohhhhhhh. I see what you mean! I am also not sure what that is. o_O it looks like the same hair they use in the actual pony figures...but I have no idea how I would sew that into a plush. I know some of the G3 pony plush used yarn for hair.. but I didn't much care for that look myself which is why I did what I did with fluttershy. :I

You know also I was thinking about this comment and I thought I could probably embroider lines down the hair (kind of like how it looks on the show, you know?) it would take another 2-3 hours, probably, but it would give the hair a less "SOLID LUMP LOLOOOOL" look. :u Do you think that would work better as well?

I always like laying down plush, that's why I made them. |D It does seem more unique as well, I think if other people made them they'd probably do standing ones.

I think its because a lot of people on dA are underage and don't understand the kind of time/work that goes into these. It seems like every day I get more comments on dA asking me to sell Fluttershy... Maybe I should ask a few of them what price they would pay to get an idea? \:
[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 02:21 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not sure I'd like the yarn.

Hm... I've never seen something like that done on a pony plush. I'd have to see it before I'm 100% certain. I think it's more the shape of the mane that's bothering me. If the overall shape doesn't look quite right, adding embroidery may not make much difference. And I do like the simplicity of having a plush-filled mane with no embroidery on it. It works well on this style of plush.

I have a soft spot for laying down plush because they remind me of the Ty Pillow Pals. I loved those when I was a kid.

Maybe make a poll on DA? Asking potential buyers outright could be taken the wrong way.
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 03:21 am (UTC)
The yarn doesn't look as good and obviously I can't think of anyway to style it... and really the hair styles on these characters adds a lot to them, so I'd hate to make those so generic.

Yeaaaa. I like simplistic stuff too! I know what you mean, I like how embroidery looks but it can be such a huge pain to do... Is it just the shape on fluttershy, like you mentioned maybe accentuating the curls might make it look less flat? I'm just trying to figure out for some of the others, so they don't turn out similarly. :o

I feel like I should take some better pictures of her or a video or something just to show exactly how she's constructed better... IDK THOUGH, I just wanna try to get as many ideas to fix on the next one as i can.

ALSO TY WAS A HUGE INFLUENCE ON MY LOVE FOR LAYING PLUSH.. XD I loved ty plush when I was younger... one of my favorites ever.

i would make a poll but i think you need to be a subscriber to do it? :( and yea, you are right, ive been telling mostly everyone that i am currently considering it but no yes or no's either way. lol.
[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 06:45 am (UTC)
Yeah, it's the shape on Fluttershy's mane that's the problem. I think the shape of the front of her mane is perfect, but the shape of the back seems too flat.

I still love Ty Plush, but considering I'm trying to sell a few hundred from my hardcore collection phase, I feel bad buying the ones that I still want.
[identity profile] h1n1vulpix.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 4th, 2011 09:05 am (UTC)
I am so bad at pricing stuff so you can disregard what I put for those because I have no clue at all ;n; sob I feel really bad for putting low values but I figured those would be starting values? You know like for an auction? I find it really hard to put a price on custom things since they are handmade so ahhhhh I'm really bad to judge on stuff like that ;n;

But in any case, I would LOVE to commission you price depending ;u; Your fluttershy looked so great omg. I mean, if anything, I'd make the head a teeny bit smaller, but the embroidery is fantastic. Absolutely pro ;u;
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 01:56 am (UTC)
No its totally fine! That's the reason I put the poll up in the first place. :3 I just want to kind of get some ideas in my head so I know where I want to go from there.

Also, the head being smaller *is* the one FOR SURE change I am going to make on this pattern. It's funny because in my prototype it didn't look too off, but when I finally put her together my first thought was her head was too big as well. LOL. No one else pointed it out though so I wondered if I was just imagining it (still had plans to change it though :b) it's a super easy thing to adjust in the pattern, as well. :D

This is all like constructive crit here, because if I am planning on making more I just want them to get better! So don't feel bad about anything. :3

[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 03:16 am (UTC)
Yea, I put it on her and I thought it was really cute too (especially when I put the eyes on) I still want to make it just a /little/ smaller... it was sort of difficult to get on her body because of how it turned out...

I might add a little more definition to the face so the nose stands out slightly better too... But I think this turned out pretty okay for my first one?? (THEY CAN ONLY GET BETTER I HOPE XD)
[identity profile] h1n1vulpix.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 02:24 am (UTC)
derp sorry for the late reply!!

I really don't mind giving critique as long as I know it's okay C: I went back and looked at the several angles you posted of the plush on your deviantART account, and I must say, you really have a good feel for shaping plush. Everything has EXCELLENT shape, I just think the one thing you need to work on is proportion. You really manage to make the plush look really three-dimensional and not-flat. But like I said, the head does need to be a bit smaller, or at least the torso bigger. I honestly really like how you did the mane/tail. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think you really made it work well. Your embroidery is BEAUTIFUL and that alone makes the plush look absolutely pro. I'd actually make the wings bigger too. They kinda look like they are positioned forward instead of back as well. They kinda work like that, though. I'm curious to see what they'd look like positioned differently.

I'd really like to see more C: And I'd really honestly commission a Dash from you.
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 02:54 am (UTC)
Yea I'm gonna adjust the size of the head, because it will be a lot easier than re-doing the entire body pattern. :D Plus the head having less pieces in it will mean less margin for error on the next one... :3

The wings is the only part of this pattern I didn't keep either. I'm going to completely re-do them when I make another one with wings.. Fluttershy's were way too difficult and didn't turn out like I'd planned so I hope those will come out better too. |D As for positioning...that is something that took me a while to decide on! Fixing the wing pattern might help make them look less derpy, but also her head being smaller will make them stand out more too. I put them on her body before I attached the head and they looked perfect there... XD;

Also I attached them that way because in like all the Fluttershy art they're standing straight up from her body with like, the top/back facing closer to her head.. if you hold the wings straight out they follow that same line as well.. Unless you were talking about something else entirely? :o

Thanks you though ;3; I like getting tips~ And rainbow dash seems quite popular! I should make her for one of my practice ponies too. :b
[identity profile] h1n1vulpix.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 03:01 am (UTC)
Well there you go! C: Really, the head size is the only thing that really stood out to me.

I dunno if it's just the angles of the pictures for the wings or what, but something about them just seemed a teeny bit off to me? Although I do understand what you're saying when you're describing how they stand straight out. That sounds really cute. <3

Haha, I'm trying! ;3; Rainbow Dash really is probably one of the more popular ones, but her design does incorporate a lot of my favorite things (she's my favorite color, wings, RAINBOOOOOOOOOWS) and her overall attitude tends to make her really strike home as a confident, loyal individual. oops tl;dr, Dash is definitely my favorite
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 03:08 am (UTC)
I could try positioning them down her body a little more, part of the reason the wings might look weird is because the big head is holding them down sort of. LOL. Her hair hides them really well too. :| I debated on making her wings folded down because fluttershy doesn't really seem to fly much in the show anyway but all the art i was finding of her had them up....

BUT IF I MAKE DASH I WILL NEED TO FIX THE WINGS ANYWAYS. XD anyways i super appreciate the tips! :33

I'm kind of new to the pony thing, but I think I'm catching on that Dash is one of the more popular ones.. XD I think its obvious I like Fluttershy?? I also really like Rarity... which seems weird for me because in most other media I don't usually like characters like her? Maybe because she just doesn't strike me as a total ass like most of fancy-pants characters are? IDK. tbh i don't really dislike any of them but somehow those two stuck out to me the most. xD
[identity profile] h1n1vulpix.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 03:24 am (UTC)
Hmm, yknow I think their location is just fine :o It might very well be the head holding them down as you say. I honestly like that her wings aren't folded. They look better this way, regardless of show canon. c:

The mane 6 are all pretty popular. c: Flutter is adorable and I've found a lot of people that relate to her, and I've also come across a lot of friends that really love Rarity. She isn't quite what you'd expect from a character like that I suppose! Twilight is my second favorite because I relate to her the most :V

This poll was a bit hard to answer for me! If you were to open commissions and I was not so darn broke, I'd love to see the following made into plush by you:

Rainbow Dash
Derpy Hooves
Luna

Yes, I voted a 4 on Fluttershy's appearance. Being an artist, that is so hard on her own work, I always feel there is room for improvement. I hope that does not sound to harsh...

As for price, I am one of those pains who picked "other!" It is really hard to price work, something is only worth what a person is truly willing to pay now days. A lot of people want something for nothing I'm afraid...:\

You could start at a higher price and lower it if need be! You can always go down in price, but it is never a good idea to go up, once your set your prices...;)

Now, some artist are always under pricing themselves! One certain awesome plush maker comes to mind, she just does not understand why people are willing to pay so much for her work!

*also has an OC pony*
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 5th, 2011 02:00 am (UTC)
It seems a lot of people like Rainbow Dash. LOL. I am obviously going to need to work on a pattern for her as well. Haha. :D

Also that's why I made this poll! I want to get opinions so I can adjust the pattern and make them as good as I can. I mean as long as no one is just like WOW THIS SUCKS YOU SUCK then its fine. You are definitely right about there always being more room for improvement though. I've actually never re-used a pattern for a plush so sometimes its a little hard for me to hone my skills on a certain design... I think this will be good for me. :3

Yea I know some artists that underprice as well. :( It's always really sad to me when I see it. But on the other hand I can see why people do? sometimes it feels like you might have a bit of an ego to price things too high! (not saying people do, but I know if I came out and was like THIS THING IS $100 :D:D:DD I'd feel a little bad about it.. LOL)

Also you have an OC pony too? :D I'd love to see her (or him..? XD)
[identity profile] pheonixxfoxx.livejournal.com wrote:

I guess Rainbow Dash is just 20% cooler?! XD

Photobucket

Practice makes perfect is all I can say! Just like most thing, plush making is a learning experience. I need to work more on my sculpting skills...;)

It is hard to find that right price when it comes to custom work. No matter what, there will always be someone to complain that the price is to high! Sadly, we can't please the world...:\

Here she is:

Photobucket

I very loosely based her off of my fursona. She could still use some tweaking...;)
[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 6th, 2011 02:55 am (UTC)
ahhh she is super cute! :O Also I did not know you had a fursona... I'd like to see her too! lol. What is that for her cutie mark?
[identity profile] pheonixxfoxx.livejournal.com wrote:

Yep, I have a fursona...hence my username! I have never shared her with anyone online, I guess I am afraid of someone making off with her design?! I actually never knew she was a fursona until recent years. I had never heard the term used, but I designed Foxy back when I was in the 6th grade. As I have grown and matured, so has she...;)

It is a Phoenix, it is actually a symbol used in the game Clive Barker's Undying. Way back when I had a program that could hack the game, I used the symbols and made an Undying desktop theme. Obviously, the Phoenix has come in handy for other things too!! XD
